The Gathering Project revisits how and why Hawaiians and people of Hawaiʻi gathered throughout history. Once commonplace, people of all walks of life gathered in Kou (old Honolulu town) to exchange ideas, impassioned viewpoints, and diverse opinions. When Kanaka ʻŌiwi and citizens loyal to the Hawaiian Kingdom came together, communal needs were prioritized to produce innovative ideas and solutions to perplexing situations.

On the occasion of Hawai‘i Triennial 2022, The Gathering Project reclaims the nature of gathering, in a Hawaiian way, at Iolani Palace, which once stood as the thriving heart of Hawaiian Kingdom. Diverse and engaged members of communities expound on topics with local and global relevance, those with a particular focus on deep pilina, or connectivity, to living in the Hawaiian Islands. Learning through listening with mutual respect and unanticipated outcomes, The Gathering Project aims for communal healing and discovery.
