Art Labor is an artist collective founded in 2012, composed of artists Thảo Nguyên Phan, Trương Công Tùng, and Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần. They are based in Ho Chi Minh City and work between urban and rural areas, especially the Central Highlands of Vietnam. They do not produce a single artwork but develop a many-years-long journey, during which one inspiration is a seed to cultivate. The seed grows — the inspiration expands and bears into a rhizome of projects and artworks. Their practice addresses various socio-political issues in Vietnamese society, from environmental degradation to indigenous rights and post-colonial narratives through relational installations, moving images, and social interventions. Their projects have been showcased at Okayama Art Summit; CCA-NTU Singapore; CCA Warsaw; Dhaka Art Summit; Times Museum Guangdong; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Carnegie International.
R Cham Tih is a Jrai artist and musician, who started playing traditional musical instruments at a very young age. Tih is talented in making and improving uniquely sourced instruments, using natural materials, such as bamboo, to recreate the sounds of the Central Highlands. Tih devoted himself to preserving and developing Jrai traditional music and their land. He is also a teacher who seeks to inspire the local young generation. He has participated extensively in various international musical performances and tours in Asia and beyond, such as Australia, UK, Finland, Korea, and Germany.
